Isaac & Lucy Millard Berry

Isaac Berry, a runaway slave from Palmyra, Missouri, and Lucy Esther Millard were married in a tiny town called Little River, Ontario Canada in 1858. They lived in Canada for nineteen years where 6 or their 8 children were born. They came to Michigan in 1877 and settled in Mecosta County, Morton Township; the area now known as School Section Lake Park. After Settling in Michigan, two more children were born, Malinda and John.

Isaac and Lucy, after settling on 83 acres, began the task of clearing the land and constructing the necessary buildings to house livestock and other farm animals. Isaac also started an orchard.

He set aside two acres of the original 83 acres, for a schoolhouse. A log schoolhouse was constructed with the assistance of his neighbors,  on these 2 acres in 1877.

Isaac was a blacksmith, doing all the necessary repairs that were needed in the neighborhood. He was also a beekeeper.

Family ties are treasured things and far though we may roam,

the tender bond with those we love still pull our hearts toward home.

HAPPINESS IS………

Happiness is the family whose members play together and work together and know one another’s hearts.

They think differently, but their thoughts meet with understanding.

They follow different ways, but their actions have a common purpose.

The unity of such a family are like silken threads, strong and true, and woven together harmoniously.
